Solid board cartons are built on heavy fibreboard — a denser, rigid substrate that holds shape on shelf, takes a knock in transit, and lands with weight in the hand. Different category to our lighter folding cartons: same factory, same press, heavier brief. Two-piece set-up presentation cases, heavy-duty retail shippers, rigid gift boxes, automotive parts cartons. Designed in-house, printed on the B1 5-colour press, die-cut on the Bobst, then either folded and glued on our line or hand-assembled when the structure calls for it.

Every solid board carton moves through four production stages without leaving the building. Structural design rates the cutter-die for the substrate weight. The B1 press lays down ink and coating on the show face. Bobst die-cutting takes the heavy sheet to formed blanks. Fold-and-glue jobs go through the folder/gluer line; rigid set-up boxes are hand-finished on the floor.

Common questions.

What's the difference between solid board cartons and folding cartons?

Folding cartons are built on lighter coated boards (typically 200–450gsm FBB, SBS, or GC1/GC2) — folded flat, glued along one seam, shipped as flat blanks for retail packs that travel and stack. Solid board cartons use heavier substrate (typically 600gsm+ solid fibreboard) that holds rigidity — either folded into heavy-duty shippers and cases on the same folder/gluer line, or hand-assembled as set-up boxes when the structure can’t fold. Same factory, same press, different brief: the substrate decides which page you’re on.

What board weights and grades do you print on?

[TBC — typical solid fibreboard range, e.g. 600–2000gsm coated solid board, kraft-lined chipboard, white-lined chipboard (WLC), greyboard, food-grade solid board.] Material chain-of-custody is FSC-certified through to despatch. If you have a specific board in mind — graded for rigidity, FSC, food-contact compliance, or recycled content — we’ll print to it.

Are solid board cartons machine-foldable, or do they need hand-assembly?

Both, depending on the structure. Heavy-duty shippers and crash-lock retail boxes go through our three folder/gluer machines on the same line as folding cartons. Two-piece set-up cases (separate base and lid) and rigid gift boxes that don’t fold are hand-assembled on the floor. The brief decides — the spec list and quote will name which production route the job runs.

Do you handle structural design for rigid set-up boxes?

Yes. Rigid structural design is part of our Cardboard Engineering capability — CAD-drawn cutter-die layouts rated for the substrate weight, white-board mockups, sample iterations until the structure works for the load and the shelf. Supply us a cutter-die if you have one; otherwise we draw from a brief.

What's a typical lead time for a solid board carton job?

Most fold-and-glue shippers move from approved artwork to plate within [X] working days, with print, die-cutting, and gluing scheduled on a timeline we share with each quote. Rigid set-up boxes typically run [X] working days longer because of hand-finishing. End-to-end production in one factory removes the supply-chain hops that add days to a typical lead time.
